Lost TAX Exempt Status! Is this YOU!
Doug Oldmixon, State Advocate
The IRS has revoked the tax-exempt status for thousands of charitable entities in Texas, including 119 units related to the Knights of Columbus.
Attached is a list of these units sorted by zip code. The source file is on the IRS website at: http://www.irs.gov/charities/article/0,,id=240099,00.html
Quick action is required by each unit to be reinstated by the IRS so that income taxes will not be owed on income reported by each entity.
Instructions from the IRS website for seeking reinstatement of tax exempt status by the IRS are also included in an separate attachment.
Basic instructions from the Supreme Advocate for 2009 and 2010 income tax reporting by Knights of Columbus units is also attached.
The 2009 package has some very helpful general information including the group exemption letters and general status explanations.
The income guidelines for Form 990 filing have changed for 2010 and this is detailed in the shorter package for 2010. Please read well.
Each unit should seek the assistance of a CPA or tax attorney to handle these matters. If a unit does not have either, you may contact the Audit Committee Chair:
Brother Knight Roy Rabenaldt, a CPA at Dunn & Dill CPAs, P.C. by phone at 972-485-5333 or by email at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for further assistance.
Please DO NOT DELAY in seeking reinstatement of each unit’s tax exempt status. Loss of status could be a significant blow to the charitable character of our Order.
It also potentially causes serious damage to our credibility with the public and calls into question the integrity of our charitable intentions. Do not let this happen.
Please take immediate steps to resolve these issues and maintain our Order’s sterling reputation as a charitable organization. Thank you.
