By Chet Dombrowski, Ascension Bastrop Council 14943
Imagine the position of Fr. Rafael Padilla. He had just assumed his new duties as Pastor of Ascension Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 1st. He conducted his first masses at his new pastorate on Saturday and Sunday September 3rd and 4th introducing himself to the parishioners.
Council 4054 Anderson Texas donated coffee ,plastic boxes to transport food, gallon bags for snack food, hot cups for coffee for firefighters working in Grimes, Montag and Waller City.
Today State Treasurer, Terry Simonton, General Agent Tom Supak, Executive Secretary Mike McLaughlin & Diocesan Deputy Bill Harris and his wife Layne traveled to Bastrop along with the many Knights from the Bastrop local council to help give assistance to the people who have been displaced or lost their homes in the fires.

BASTROP — The church that never closes is three miles from the fire. When the wind blows just right, the smoke looms over the grounds like a churning surf of grays and whites, but there is safety and sanctuary inside the parish hall, where the hopeless came for hope and a box of fried chicken.
