Obituary for Victor T Mendez

Victor Tabera Mendez, Sr., 88, of Caldwell passed away Monday, September 25 at his home with his family by his side. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 pm Thursday, September 28 at St Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Jesse Martinez as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 pm until 8 pm Wednesday with a rosary recited at 7 pm at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mr. Martinez was born January 12, 1929 to Natividad and Sabina Mendez on a farm near Caldwell. Growing up, Victor had three brothers and two sisters. His favorite things to do in his free time was to play baseball with his friends, go fishing, play dominoes or cards and go to the night spot with his dad. Victor's first job was in the laundry at the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth. Wile working there he met Eulalia Pantoja whom he later married at St Mary's Catholic Church the day after her 14th birthday
on July 5, 1947. They recently celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary. Victor owned and  operated several businesses including "Hamburgers on Wheels" and Mendez Repair for several years and also worked for Santa Fe Railroad, Harvey Motors and Western Auto. Mr.and Mrs. Mendez have been members of St. Mary's Catholic Church for 70 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lucio Mendez, Julian Mendez and Tony Mendez and two sisters, Epifania Sanchez and Jana Jimenez.

Survivors include his wife of more than 70 years, Eulalia Mendez of Caldwell; three sons, Pablo Mendez and wife, Sylvia of Bryan, Ned Mendez and Victor Mendez, Jr. and wife, Michelle all of Caldwell; six daughters, Jane Mendez, Mary Pipkin and husband, Lanny; Victoria Garcia and husband, Robert, Yolanda Brinkman and husband, Larry, Carol Coker and husband, Weldon all of Caldwell and Susan Hovis and husband, Jeffrey of Charlston, WV; a brother, Amelio Mendez of Caldwell; 23 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
