Today’s Catholic youth will become the Catholic adults of tomorrow. By their actions and decisions, today’s young Catholics will play a major role in the future direction of the Catholic Church. As Knights, it is our obligation to fight for the Church; it is of paramount importance to strengthen the foundation of Catholic principles and teachings in the hearts and minds of the youth.
PATRIOTIC ESSAY CONTEST
The Knights of Columbus Essay Contest is open to all Catholic students in public, private or parochial schools in grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 during the current school year. The goal of the Essay Contest is to give students the opportunity to define the role of a Catholic citizen in a free society and to strengthen the bond between the Knights of Columbus and local schools.
Theme: “The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society”
Timetable
Councils, Assemblies and Circles should order the Essay Contest kits from Supreme (Kit #EA-KIT) in July. Contact schools and parishes to secure participation by August. Announce the contest start date. Essays should be submitted by October 15th to local Councils, Assemblies, or Circles. Judging is a follows:
Council - November 2012 (Make copies & forward original & entry form)
District - December 2012
Diocese - January 2013***
State - March 2, 2013 - Winners will be recognized at the State Convention
April 15 - Essays due to Supreme Council
June: International Essay Contest winners announced by Supreme Council. Winners receive:
1st place winner will receive a check for $300
2nd place winner will receive a check for $200
3rd place winner will receive a check for $100

SUBSTANCE ABUSE AWARENESS POSTER CONTEST
The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest is open to all young people between the ages of 8 and 14. Contest entrants compete in one of two age groups – ages 8 through 11, and ages 12 through 14. Each poster must include a slogan reflecting either of the topics and an original visual image. Posters may only be entered under one topic.
Theme: “Alcohol Awareness and Abuse or Drug Awareness and Abuse”

Councils, Assemblies and Circles should order the Essay Contest kits from Supreme (Kit #SA-KIT) in July. Contact schools and parishes to secure participation by August. Announce the contest start date. Essays should be submitted by December 15th to local Councils, Assemblies, or Circles. Judging is a follows:
Council - January 2013 (Make Digital Photo of each poster & forward original with entry form)
District - January 2013
Diocese - February 2013***
State - March 2, 2013. Winners will be recognized at the state convention
March 31st: Posters due to Supreme Council for international judging.
May: International Poster Contest winners announced by Supreme Council.

ST. CHRISTOPHER AWARD
The St. Christopher award is given to a Brother Knight who works with the Boy Scouts of America and has actively worked to ensure participation in the religious scouting awards program. For his hard work, the Brother Knight receives a jewel to wear around his neck, a lapel pin and a certificate signed by the State Deputy. To receive this award the order form must be downloaded from: http://www.tkofc.org/uploads/St_Christopher_Application.pdf and signed by the Grand Knight and mailed to the State Family/Youth Activities Chairman. This Award has a cost of $35.00 per Award. The Award should be presented at an open event – Family Social, at a Mass with Priest permission, etc. (not just at a council meeting).
