St. Christopher Award
The St. Christopher award is given to a Brother Knight who works with the Boy
Scouts of America. For his hard work, the Brother Knight receives a jewel to
wear around his neck, a lapel pin and a certificate signed by the State Deputy.
To receive this award the order form must be downloaded from the tkofc.org web
site and signed by the Grand Knight and mailed to the Youth Chairman:

Patriotic Essay Contest
The Knights of Columbus Essay Contest is open to all Catholic students in
public, private or parochial schools in grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 during the
current school year. The goal of the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest is to
give students the opportunity to define the role of a Catholic citizen in a free
society, and to strengthen the bond between the Knights of Columbus and local
schools.
Timetable
- July/August: Councils, Assemblies and Circles order Knights of Columbus
Essay Contest Kits from the Supreme Council Office.
- August/September: Councils, Assemblies and Circles contact schools to
secure cooperation. At this time the date, place and means of recognizing
winners should be determined.
- September/October: Students write essays. Essays should be submitted to
judges by October 15.
- October/November: Judges review essays for council level.
- December: District judging if necessary.
- January: Diocesan judging if necessary.
- February/March: State judging.
- April: Essays due to the Supreme Council for international judging by
April 15. Jurisdiction winners should be recognized at the state convention
or another jurisdiction event.
- May/June: International Essay Contest winners announced by the Supreme
Council Office.
The theme of the essay contest is “The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen
in a Free Society.”
The contest opens the doors of young minds, enabling the entrants to be
creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work.

Substance Abuse Poster Program
Entries in the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest
must fall under one of these topics:
Alcohol Awareness and Abuse or
Drug Awareness and Abuse
Each poster must include a slogan reflecting either of the topics and an
original visual image. Posters may only be entered under one topic.
The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest is open to all
young people between the ages of 8 and 14. Contest entrants compete in one of
two age groups – ages 8 through 11, and ages 12 through 14.
Council Level: Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest
kits, which contain all the materials needed to participate in the contest, can
be ordered from the Department of Fraternal Services by calling (203) 752-4270.
Winners at the local level are automatically entered in the next level of
competition, either district or regional level; and the winners from that level
will have their posters entered in the state level of competition. Winning
entries at the state level, along with their entry forms, will be submitted to
the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council office in New Haven, CT, where they will
be entered in the international competition with winners from contests in other
jurisdictions.
Rules
Posters must reflect either the theme of Alcohol Awareness and Abuse or Drug
Awareness and Abuse. The themes for the contest will be emailed to the Diocesan
Deputies and posted on the State Council Website tkofc.org.
Each poster should be the original work including concept, layout, slogan and
any visual images of a single person.
Posters must be 11 X 17 inches in size. If pastels, chalk or charcoal are used
the poster must be laminated or covered with clear plastic. Posters may be in
color or black and white.
Each poster must be submitted with a Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse
Awareness Poster Contest entry form. The name and age of the person entering the
poster should be included on the back of the poster.
Timetable
Local councils should begin promoting the contest at the start of the school
year so that students can work on posters during the fall months.
• Council Level January 2012.
• District/Diocesan Level February 2012.
• State Level deadline March 1, 2012.

The deadline to submit the Diocesan winners for State Competition is March 1,
2012. The deadline for receipt of state-level winning entries at the Supreme
Council office for the international competition is March 31, 2012.
International winners will be announced in May. All entries become the property
of the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council. Posters will not be returned.
State Free Throw Tournament
The State Free Throw Tournament will be held in San Antonio TX on March 3, 2012
at Antonian High School. Check the State website for additional details.
The Councils should order their Free Throw Kits (FT-KITS) in October using
the form in the Forms Booklet.
The proposed schedule for holding the Council, District and Diocesan
tournaments are as follows:
* Council - January 2012
* District - February 2012
* Diocese - February 2012
* State - March 3, 2012
The District Deputies should order their District competition medals from the
Supreme Council using the order form provided in their August or September DD
Newsletter from Supreme.
First, Second and Third Place Medals for the Diocesan winners will be
provided by the State Council and given to the Diocesan Deputies.
Ensure the contestants are between 10 – 14 years old as of January 1, 2012 – NO
EXCEPTIONS. Age eligibility of the candidate will be determined as of January 1,
2012.
The Diocesan Program Chairman should report the winners to the State Youth
Chairman and check that the State Per Capita for each Council with a participant
has been paid or is current as soon as their tournament is over so the list of
contestants for the State Tournament can be prepared. Include a copy of the
Birth Certificate with the score sheets to the State Free Throw Chairman.
Winners will receive a trophy for First, Second and Third Place for each age
group. First place winners will be submitted to Supreme for the National
competition.
The Diocesan Programs Chairman shall be the Free Throw Chairman and send
names to the State Youth Activity Chairman.
