The Knights of Columbus Board of Directors visited the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz in October 2004, during a pilgrimage to Poland concluding the Order’s yearlong celebration of the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s pontificate. Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said at the time, “Words cannot adequately describe the emotions that one feels there. The sense of horror at the inhumanity of the crimes committed there is overpowering.” In the picture above, Bishop Tadeusz Rakoczy of Bielsko-Zywiec and Bishop Thomas Daily of Brooklyn, then supreme chaplain, lead the group in prayer before an execution wall.
